All cars and light trucks built and sold in the United States after January 1, 1996 were required to be OBD II equipped. In general, this means all 1996 model year cars and light trucks are compliant, even if built in late 1995.

What does it mean?
There are many sensors and computerized components that manage your vehicle’s engine performance and emissions. When one of these fails, the "check engine light" is illuminated. Although your car may seem to run fine, it is important to have the issue addressed to prevent long-term problems.

Heat is one of the top two reasons for transmission failures. The other reason is the lack of maintenance not using the proper transmission fluids. If you don’t take care of your transmission and the fluid becomes burnt, you might as well put a fork in it, it will be well done by then. When an engine is operating outside of its normal emissions parameters and the light flashes, your car means business. If the check-engine light comes on, here are some tips on what you should do:

Look for a serious problem that requires immediate attention. Check your dashboard gauges and lights for indications of low oil pressure or overheating. These conditions mean you should pull over and shut off the engine as soon as you can find a safe place to do so. On some cars, a yellow "check engine" means investigate the problem, while a red "check engine" means stop right now.
Try tightening your gas cap. This often solves the problem. Keep in mind that it may take several trips before the light resets. Some vehicles have a separate indicator that warns of a loose gas cap before the condition sets off the "check engine" light.
Reduce speed and load. If the "check engine" light is blinking or you notice any serious performance problems, such as a loss of power, reduce your speed and try to reduce the load on the engine. For example, it would be a good idea to stop towing a trailer. Have the car checked as soon as possible to prevent expensive damage.

How to Read Codes From Your Check Engine Light (For older cars)

After 1996 all cars were made to hook up to an external error code reader. Before 1996 however, cars reported their errors from the computer themselves via a flashing code from the check engine light.

The dreaded check engine light comes on while you are driving only to signify that there is a problem. The specific error or failing part could be one of many different things that the computer senses for. You can bridge a set of wires in your car and send the cars computer into its error reporting mode so that you can find out what’s wrong with your car.

Again, this information is only useful for people who have cars that report engine trouble via a flashing check engine light. This should be true for many cars made before 1996.
